Current Disasters

Current DisastersKY-DR-1976 - Beginning the week of April 18, 2011 high winds, tornadoes, hail and heavy rains moved into the Commonwealth.  The heavy rains continued as one weather system after another moved through our part of the country. Some areas of the state received a total of over 20 inches of rain before finally clearing.  These historic rain amounts caused lakes and rivers to crest at unprecedented levels and historic flooding.

On May 4 Governor Beshear got word President Obama had approved a Major Disaster Declaration for mitigation and public assistance. Gov. Beshear also requested a disaster declaration for Kentucky's farm families from Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, and directed the temporary suspension of restrictions on certain motor carriers and utility vehicles delivering disaster relief supplies. In addition, he implemented an executive order to protect consumers from price gouging.

KY-DR-4008 - On June 19, strong storms impacted the Commonwealth, causing extensive flooding in southeastern Kentucky.  Governor Beshear asked for and received a major disaster for Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation in: Bell, Breathitt, Knott, Knox, Lee, Magoffin, and Perry counties.

Individual Assistance, Disaster Unemployment Assistance, Crisis Counseling, and Small Business Administration disaster loans were awarded for Bell, Knox and Perry Counties.

Individual Assistance (IA) provides federal and SBA assistance to home owners who have suffered damage to their primary residence due to the impact storms, flooding, strong winds, and tornadoes. Officials encourage those who have suffered property damage to photograph the damage, save any repair receipts, and report damages to their local county emergency director.

If you, or someone you know, have any unmet needs, please contact your County Emergency Manager or KYEM.

If you have losses or damage from the tornadoes or flooding in June, disaster assistance may be available.  You MUST register with FEMA by calling 800-621-3362.  You can also register online at www.disasterassistance.gov.
