February of 2012, will be Kentucky Earthquake Awareness Month. In support of that, the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management (KYEM) would like to recommend a wonderful tool that will aide students and families in learning important information about earthquakes and how to better prepare for these and other natural disasters.
KYEM is offering this free, downloadable, instructional unit called, "2012 Earthquake Awareness and ShakeOut Instructional Unit" (Powerpoint-7205KB). This resource was designed for all 3rd through 5th grade students, providing a thorough understanding of earthquakes and how to better prepare themselves and their family. Created by local elementary teachers, it provides the tools needed to complete a week-long learning unit. In conjunction with the school unit, KYEM would like to challenge all 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students to a statewide poster contest promoting earthquake awareness. Complete contest details are included within the 2012 Earthquake Poster Contest Guidelines (PDF-434KB). One state-wide winner from each grade level will receive an eReader! All winning posters and many of the great honorable mentions will be displayed on KYEM's website, http://www.kyem.ky.gov/postercontest and used to promote Earthquake Awareness in 2013.
KYEM has created three different 2012 KYEM Earthquake Poster Contest Announcements - 3rd (PDF-413KB), 4th (PDF-535KB), & 5th (PDF-301KB) using the winning entries from 2011. Share these with your class and display them throughout your school; YOUR student's poster could be on the 2013 announcement!
