Emergency Management shares the Governor's vision to, among other things, coordinate a system of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery and protect the lives, environment and property of the people of Kentucky.

We believe that the Commonwealth of Kentucky is one of the best places in the world to live. It is our goal to do everything we can to influence others by our actions to share that belief as well.

Kentucky Division of Emergency Management is a division of the Kentucky Department of Military Affairs and its role and function are goverened by legislative action as dictated in Chapter 39 of the Kentucky Revised Statutes, http://www.lrc.ky.gov/krs/titles.htm .

Governor Declares State of Emergency

Governor Beshear has declared that a State of Emergency exists in Kentucky due to the recent wave of severe storms and tornadoes that hit February 6, 2008. Causing seven fatalities and many homes damaged or destroyed. Those counties in Kentucky hit hardest were: Allen, Christian, Fayette, Hardin, Hart, Meade, Mercer, Monroe, and Muhlenberg. The fatalities occurred in Muhlenberg (3) and Allen (4) counties.

In his letter, Governor Beshear said, "I have determined that this incident is of such severity and magnitude that effective response is beyond the capabilities of the Commonwealth and the affected local governments and that supplementary federal assistance is necessary."

In his request, Governor Beshear specifically asked for Individual and Household Assistance, Crisis Counseling, Disaster Legal Services, Disaster Unemployment Assistance, Small Business Administration disaster loans, Federal Highway Administration Assistance, United States Department of Agriculture disaster loans, Hazard Mitigation, and other assistance as may be found appropriate.

March is Severe Storms Awareness Month
