KYEM - Kentucky Division of Emergency Management

Welcome to the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management (KYEM) web site. We hope that this will become a valuable tool and a first stop when you need information about emergency management and our partners across the Commonwealth.

Emergency Management shares the Governor's vision to, among other things, coordinate a system of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery and protect the lives, environment and property of the people of Kentucky.

We believe that the Commonwealth of Kentucky is one of the best places in the world to live. It is our goal to do everything we can to influence others by our actions to share that belief as well.

Kentucky Division of Emergency Management is a division of the Kentucky Department of Military Affairs and its role and function are governed by legislative action as dictated in Chapter 39 of the Kentucky Revised Statutes.

The Kentucky Division of Emergency Management consists of our main office located on Boone National Guard Center, at 100 Minuteman Parkway, in Frankfort, Ky  40601 and 11 Regional Response Offices located throughout the state.  Click to view: KYEM Regional Map

Winter Snow Storm

Winter Weather Safety and Preparedness Tips

Officials prepare as another winter storm is expected to impact Kentucky later tonight and thru midday Wednesday. The National Weather Services offices, serving Kentucky, conducted conference calls today as two weather systems are expected to bring snow and a brief period of rain/snow mix (mostly in the southeast regions) before changing to all snow.

The first system is expected to reach the western counties early this evening and continue eastward, with the Louisville area seeing snow around midnight and Eastern Kentucky expecting snow around 3:00AM EST.

Predicted total accumulations range from 3-4" in the western regions, 4-5" in Central Bluegrass, 6 plus inches northern portions, north of the Mountain Parkway can expect a total of 4-8" and 1 -3" in the south eastern region.

Along with the snow a second cold front will bring 30-35 mph winds which could cause drifting snow, white out conditions and near zero wind chills.

Some flooding may occur in low lying areas from previous rains and run off. Please, if you encounter water over a roadway remember; STOP TURN AROUND DON’T DROWN!

Avoid travel, stay indoors and continue to monitor local media and NOAA Weather Alert Radios.

Road conditions throughout the state can be found on the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Web site at www.511.ky.gov or by calling 511 in Kentucky or 1-866-737-3767 for out-of-state callers.

Additional information, including winter safety tips and links to weather sites can be found at www.kyem.ky.gov.

H1N1 Virus

The Kentucky Division of Emergency Management stands ready to fully support the Kentucky Department of Public Health in response to the recent outbreak of the H1N1 Virus that is impacting the United States and international countries.

Kentucky health officials continue to ask that Kentuckians who have traveled recently to Mexico or other countries or communities within the U.S. where the new H1N1 influenza strain known as swine flu has been reported, or who are planning such travel, be alert for the symptoms of swine flu in the following ways:

- Monitor yourself and travel companions for symptoms of fever, chills, headache, sore throat, cough, body aches, and vomiting or diarrhea.

- If symptoms of illness develop within seven days of travel return, seek evaluation by a health care provider as soon as possible.

- Be sure to tell your health care provider about your recent travel and suggest testing for influenza.

- Stay home from work, school and other public places until you are feeling well.

People who have been in close contact with a person who has been diagnosed with swine flu or who reside in communities where there are one or more confirmed swine flu cases should also be alert for these symptoms.

Common sense precautions to prevent illness include: avoiding close contact with those who are ill; staying home when sick; covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing; avoiding touching the eyes, nose or mouth; and frequent hand washing.

The general public is encouraged to call:
1-800-CDC-INFO  (1-800-232-4636 )
